FARIDABAD NEWS 12 AUG 2026 : GAUTAM : J.C. Bose University of Science and Technology, YMCA, Faridabad, observed the 134th birth anniversary of Padma Shri Dr. S.R. Ranganathan, widely regarded as the father of library science and celebrated across the country as National Librarians' Day.
The programme was organized by the Deendayal Upadhyay Knowledge Resource Centre (Central Library) in the New Building to commemorate the remarkable contributions of Dr. Ranganathan to the development of library science and the promotion of a strong culture of knowledge and learning.
The programme was coordinated under the guidance of Prof. Sachin Teotia, Chairman, Library Committee, and Dr. P.N. Bajpai, Deputy Librarian. Registrar Prof. Ajay Ranga, along with Deans and Chairpersons of various Teaching Departments, participated in the programme and paid floral tributes to the portrait of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan.
Speaking on the occasion, Registrar Prof. Ajay Ranga highlighted the enduring relevance of Dr. Ranganathan's pioneering work in shaping modern librarianship in India. His landmark contribution to library classification, organization and management has laid the foundation for systematic access to knowledge and continues to influence libraries and information centres across the country.
The programme also featured discussions on the importance of libraries in higher education and research, particularly in the rapidly evolving digital environment. The participants emphasized that libraries today have expanded beyond their traditional role as repositories of books and have emerged as dynamic knowledge resource centres providing access to digital databases, e-books, e-journals, research literature and a wide range of scholarly resources.
Prof. Sachin Teotia noted the vision of Dr. Ranganathan remains highly relevant in the present era, where easy, equitable and efficient access to authentic information is essential for quality education, research and innovation. The role of academic libraries has become even more significant with the increasing adoption of digital learning, open educational resources, online databases and emerging technologies including Artificial Intelligence.
The event provided an opportunity for the University fraternity to reflect on the changing role of libraries and the need to continuously strengthen library services in accordance with the evolving requirements of students, faculty members, researchers and other stakeholders.
