FARIDABAD NEWS 12 SEPT 2025 : GAUTAM : J.C. Bose University of Science and Technology, YMCA, Faridabad, observed World Suicide Prevention Week by organizing an awareness and targeted intervention program focused on mental health, suicide prevention, and substance abuse.
The program commenced with an address by Dr. Ankur Sharma, Medical Officer of the University, who emphasized that suicide remains one of the leading causes of death among the 15–29 age group, but it is entirely preventable through awareness, early detection, and timely support. He urged students to watch out for warning signs such as withdrawal, changes in behavior, loss of self-care, or expressions of hopelessness among peers, and to seek professional guidance without hesitation. Stressing the importance of such initiatives, Dr. Sharma called upon the campus community to build a culture of empathy, resilience, and mutual support to help save lives.
Following this, Ms. Preeti Yadav, Clinical Psychologist, delivered a session on Mental Health, Suicide & Suicide Prevention. She discussed the psychological factors that increase vulnerability—such as depression, loneliness, relationship failures, anxiety, and fear—and shared strategies to strengthen coping mechanisms.
Ms. Anita Chaudhary, Counsellor, spoke on HIV/AIDS and Drug Abuse, highlighting the risks associated with substance dependency, peer pressure, and unsafe practices, while also encouraging students to adopt healthier lifestyles.
Mr. Sunmantra, Psychiatric Nursing Officer, conducted a screening of students using the Suicide Risk Screening Tool. The exercise was aimed at early identification of mental health concerns and providing necessary interventions.
The speakers collectively highlighted both psychological causes (loneliness, depression, anxiety) and social causes (family background, economic stress, peer pressure, drug abuse, and academic/career challenges) that contribute to suicidal tendencies. They also shared warning signs such as living in isolation, changes in sleep and eating patterns, neglect of self-care, collecting harmful objects, and openly discussing hopelessness or suicidal thoughts.
Volunteer students presented role plays on suicide prevention, HIV/AIDS, OST, and mental health issues, which helped spread awareness in an interactive and relatable manner. At the conclusion of the event, certificates were awarded to participants in recognition of their contributions.
