Expert Talk organized on Sustainable Energy Solutions for Rural Areas
FARIDABAD NEWS 16 JAN 2025 : GAUTAM ; The Centre for Energy Studies of J.C. Bose University of Science and Technology, YMCA, Faridabad, organized an expert talk by Prof. S.K. Tyagi from IIT Delhi on the topic "Agro and Agro-Processing Wastes to Clean and Green Energy for Rural and Remote Areas".
The session, presided over by Vice Chancellor Prof. S.K. Tomar and convened by Prof. Neelam Turk, Chairperson of the Centre for Energy Studies, began with a thought-provoking address by Prof. Tomar, who emphasized the urgent need to transition to sustainable energy. He remarked, “Perfection cannot be cheated, and there is always time for improvisation.” He emphasized its environmental and health impacts, remarking on the need for scalable and eco-friendly alternatives.
In his address, Prof. S.K. Tyagi highlighted critical issues like stubble burning and its environmental impacts, particularly in rural India. He quoted Gandhi’s wisdom, “Nature has enough for everyone’s need but not for everyone’s greed,” while discussing rural pollution and health risks caused by practices like charcoal burning. Sharing a global perspective, Prof. Tyagi also shared alarming statistics, citing a study by Prof. Michael Greenstone, which revealed that residents of Delhi lose an average of 11.9 years of life expectancy due to pollution.
He also presented innovations like the IIT Delhi-designed cookstove, which utilizes biomass pellets to produce minimal emissions, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional cooking methods. The discussion underscored how agro-waste can be transformed into valuable energy, benefiting rural households while mitigating pollution.
Dean of Institutions Prof. Munish Vashishath, Deans, Chairpersons and faculty members from various departments were present to grace the event.The dedicated efforts of faculty coordinators Dr. Rajesh Attri, Dr. Sakshi Kalra, Dr. Sonam Khera, Dr. Neetu Gupta, and Dr. Sachin Shoran were instrumental in the flawless organization of the session.
